A regular night of poker among for friends turns into a night full of conflict, accusations and self-examinations. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it is one that I will keep on my bookshelf for years to come. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. He begins like this. If you want a book about Closure, or Forgiveness, or Healing, try another part of the bookstore; Half a Life is about being unforgivable and unforgiven. Who would want to? But a book like this is the answer to that.
Half a Life is a thriller, too. To make something of it.
I liked that the author was able to recount the emotions he went through with the tragedy he experienced. It was very well thought through and tells the journey one has to travel when tragedy strikes. We all experience self-doubt from time to time in our lives, especially in our teen years, but when survivor guilt is added, it becomes a recipe for emotional disaster.
That it took so long to get help, is very sad, but the author was able to tell his story, albeit too drawn out for my taste, but that's my opinion. If you've ever experienced what he has, I would recommend you read this as it will help you to realize that you are not alone, and that there is the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel.
This ended up being another case of not understanding how this could get such good reviews. I get that the book is very much a product of it's time and it speaks so much of a modern yet so backward time where the characters are struggling to make the jump to modernity, yet keep getting held back by familial ties and obligations, as well as the cultural consciousness of the time. Picked this book on the whip, as I was intrigue by the cover and the author herself. This book is in so many ways wonderful at the same time it is painful. The narrator takes us back in time and tells the tale of the events that shaped her life and choices she had to make.
One person found this helpful. If we're honest, each one has pictured themselves in someone else's tragedy or trauma. In addition, each one has his own; maybe not as obvious or exposed, but grief and sorrow, nonetheless. In a way, the more severe the grief, trauma, sorrow, the more deeply affected we become.
The incident determines everything about who we are, and the relationships we form; the decisions we make, and how we see the world. As a reader of this finely written memoir, it became all the more plain, why so many fall into addiction as a way of coping, rather than walking that narrow road of courage, that Strauss so bravely describes. A life examined, and a hurt eased. The author describes what it is like to live half your life with the knowledge that you killed someone.
He describes what it is to live like that then how it is to have that relieved. Well, highlight the entire book. And then read it again. Should be a textbook for writing, psychology, and civics classes. I was captivated from the very first sentence and couldn't put it down until the last word was read. The author takes you on a journey inside a tragic accident, showing you what it feels like from a perspective you might have overlooked otherwise. Strauss's courage to write this memoir and to bare his soul for us to witness.
As a fellow author, I cringed when I read some of the negative reviews. This is a person who is peeling away the outer protective layers of himself and showing us everything inside. To judge this negatively is a sin against a fellow human being. The writing is alluring and descriptive. I found myself taking mental note of his metaphors, memorizing the imagery he brought to mind, feeling as though through reading it, I also traveled through this journey.
I thank you for sharing these intimate details of a life lived in the shadows. A part of this book will stay with me for a long time.

Jul 30, Anne Fenn rated it really liked it. This was an interesting addition to my recent reading of the letters of Judith Wright and her lover Jack McKinney in the ss. This covers her childhood and working life Armidale, Sydney and wartime Brisbane in an engaging way. Way too much exploration of Jack's philosophy had me skipping through quite a bit of it.
